Three Things to Do In Your Garden This Winter
In the winter months we tend to get out into the garden a lot less. However, there are lots of things that we can do out in the garden to keep it at its best over the winter, as well as to prepare it for next Spring. In fact, many people would say the secret to a beautiful well-kept garden in the Spring and Summer is a lot of the work put in over the winter months. Spending time out working in the garden now will potentially save you a lot more hard work later on down the line too.
So here are a few things that you can do in the winter in your garden…
Look after your Garden Furniture – The garden furniture that we all enjoy in the summer (especially in recent times when outdoor gatherings have been a safety essential!) needs to be treated with love and care over the winter. Now is the time to paint or treat any wooden furniture that you have, so that it looks its best when you want to get it back out again. Furniture should also be protected from the wintery weather at this time of the year – store it in a space like a garage or a shed, where it will be safe from the bad weather, or you could get some weatherproof covers for it.
Have a Clear Out – Anow is a really good time to have a garden clear out. If you have a lot to get rid of it might be a good idea to contact a local skip company like this Swansea skip hire company pendragonskiphire.co.uk/swansea-skip-hire to provide you with a skip. Now is a good time to cut back bushes and trees, as the plants are now in their dormant phase so less likely to be damaged by cutting back.
It is also a good idea to go through and clear out any old or broken ornaments and pots that you have and have a general tidy up in the greenhouse and shed as well, getting rid of things that are damaged or unusable. Tidying up the garden now, will make your life a lot easier in the Spring when the garden starts to get more use again and the flowers start to bloom!
Plant Some Bulbs – As well as tidying up, now is also the time to get ready for the spring. Plant bulbs that will come up in early spring – plants like snowdrops and crocus are early bloomers and a lovely symbol of the end of a long cold winter. These are also fairly hardy and easy to grow, so a good choice if you are a bit of a novice when it comes to gardening! Tulip bulbs can also be planted in the winter, but it is best to plant these later, most people opt to plant them in December.
