5 Things You Can Do to Improve Air Flow and Air Quality in Your Home

Proper air circulation and air quality are imperative. You may not realize it, but the air inside your home may actually be more polluted than the air outside your home. While you can’t equip your home with industrial equipment, like restaurant coolers and ventilators, you can take other measures to make sure that the air inside your home is breathable. When it comes down to it, ventilation is important for the sake of reducing mold outbreaks and other issues that can occur when there isn’t enough airflow. Here are five things you can do to improve airflow and air quality in your home.

  1. Change the filter on your HVAC system. Your HVAC system’s filter is important, because it blocks out dust and dander. If there weren’t a filter, you would have these particulates floating through your HVAC system and into the air of your home – adding to your indoor air pollution issue. This is why it is important to change the filter on regular basis – to improve your airflow and the efficiency of your HVAC system.
  2. Open the windows at night. It is also important to open all the windows in your home once in a while. Opening the windows can allow for fresh air to replace the air inside, which is especially important if the windows have been closed all day. Stagnant air is one of the most common ways to cause an allergy flare up. Moreover, stagnant air can cause mold and mildew outbreaks that can be incredibly difficult to remove. In the summertime, you may want to close the windows before it gets too hot – the fresh cool air may even save you some money on utility costs.
  3. Clean your home. Another way to keep air clean is to keep your home clean. If you don’t sweep, mop, toss out clutter and tidy up, you will have an excess amount of dust and other pollutants building up. All that dust building up on old boxes and items you don’t need will only wind up in the air, especially if you turn on your air conditioner or open a window.
  4. Take your shoes off at the door. Pollen is a big allergen and it is one of the most common pollutants found inside the home. However, not only can pollen be dragged in by people’s shoes – so can other particulates, including benzene, which is from car exhaust. This is why you may want to implement a “no shoes” policy inside your home. In some countries, this is standard.
  5. Plug in an air purifier. Air purifiers also work wonders when it comes to purifying the air inside your home. The best part is that there is no installation involved – it just plugs right into the wall. While you may have to change the filter once and a while, a small purifier should be able to remove much of the pollutants and particulates in the air so that your home feels fresh and the air feels clean.
